Mr. Veerapol Jirapraditkul, Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) member, as spokesperson
for the ERC, revealed that the ERC will hold a meeting on the automatic fuel tariff (FT) for the period
September-December 2018 on July 4th, and will hold an official press conference on
July 5th. Initially, it is estimated that rising fuel prices have resulted in
the FT increasing by more than 10 satang per unit. However, the relatively strong Thai Baht during the calculation period,
coupled with the ERC having accumulated over 6,500 million Baht from electricity price differences, gives confidence to freeze
the new FT at the current FT rate for the period May-August 2018, which is -
90 Baht per unit. When combined with the base electricity tariff, this will result in the public paying the same electricity cost of
5966 Baht per unit (excluding VAT).
Mr. Supant Mongkolsuthree, Chairman of the Federation of Thai Industries (FTI), stated that due to
volatile energy prices causing concern among the private sector. It is recently understood that the ERC is preparing to
consider the FT for the end of this year. Therefore, the FTI wants the ERC to freeze the FT, as electricity costs are
a significant cost for the manufacturing sector across many industries. Thus, the FTI urges the government to intervene and send a
signal to the ERC.
