NCDs stands for Non-Communicable Diseases, which are a group of non-infectious diseases not caused by pathogens and not transmitted through contact, close association, or exposure to various bodily fluids. NCDs are related to lifestyle habits and behaviors, including eating, sleeping, resting, exercising, and various activities. This group of diseases gradually accumulates symptoms, develops slowly, and progressively worsens. Once symptoms appear, chronic conditions follow. If not treated correctly and promptly, they significantly impact the lives of patients and those around them. Many patients are found to die from this group of diseases, including diabetes, high blood pressure, coronary artery disease, stroke, chronic kidney disease, hyperlipidemia, cancer, genetic diseases, cirrhosis, and dementia (Alzheimer's disease), among others.
NCDs are sometimes referred to as "self-inflicted diseases" because they result from unhealthy lifestyles, such as lack of exercise, consuming overly strong-flavored foods (e.g., excessively salty, sweet, or fatty foods), consuming high-fat foods, accumulating stress, regular exposure to toxins (e.g., alcohol consumption and smoking), and eating grilled foods too frequently, among others.
The 6 NCDs with the highest mortality rates are diabetes, cerebrovascular and cardiovascular diseases, emphysema, cancer, high blood pressure, and abdominal obesity. They are caused by 6 risk factors: alcohol, smoking, diet (excessively sweet, fatty, salty foods), insufficient exercise, stress, and genetics. They can be prevented by adopting new lifestyle behaviors, such as exercising at least 30 minutes per session, 5 times per week; refraining from alcohol; not smoking; avoiding excessively sweet, fatty, and salty foods; avoiding grilled foods; not consuming undercooked or raw food/meat; eating plenty of fruits and vegetables; getting enough rest; not staying up too late; avoiding stress; and not self-medicating without consulting a doctor or pharmacist, among others. BLCP Power Station (BLCP) continuously emphasizes and promotes healthy living and good health among its employees and the community. In collaboration with all 6 public health service centers—namely Takuan, Noen Phayom, Koh Kok, Khod Hin, Huai Pong, and Mab Kha Public Health Service Centers—BLCP has launched the project "Full Stomach, Full Merit, Full Heart with BLCP" to support, campaign for, and care for community health to prevent chronic non-communicable diseases (NCDs). One of the many health projects involves hiring the community to prepare snacks suitable for 1,200 diabetic and high blood pressure patients who visit the public health service centers each month. The project commenced in April and will continue until December 2563. Last May, BLCP distributed soy milk, low-sugar riceberry rice, and healthy sandwiches from the Noen Phayom community to patients. This project has generated continuous income for the community preparing the snacks, totaling 315,000 Baht.
Mr. Yuthana Charoenwong, Managing Director of BLCP Power Limited, stated that through continuous visits and discussions with the community, BLCP found that the majority of NCD patients, especially those with high blood pressure and diabetes, are elderly individuals who require caregivers to manage their diet and prepare appropriate meals.
Therefore, in addition to preparing healthy snacks for NCD patients, BLCP also provides knowledge and understanding about self-care and appropriate dietary consumption. This aims to help NCD patients reduce complications, disability, mortality, and financial burdens at both individual and family levels, enabling them to achieve a self-sufficient lifestyle and adequate health within a happy and sustainable society.
