Baseload Power Plants: Pillars of Thai Energy in the Transition to Clean Energy

Have you ever wondered why we have electricity available 24 hours a day?

The answer lies in "Baseload Power Plants," which operate continuously without interruption to produce the basic electricity essential for daily life and driving the nation's economy.

 

Baseload power plants are like "large batteries" that consistently supply us with electricity, whether it's day or night, summer or rainy season. In Thailand, most baseload power plants use natural gas as fuel, such as South Bangkok Power Plant and Bang Pakong Power Plant, which are crucial for generating electricity for Bangkok and its vicinity.

 

In addition to natural gas power plants, Thailand also has BLCP Power Plant, located in Rayong Province, which is a Thermal Power Plant that uses high-quality bituminous coal as fuel. This power plant not only generates electricity efficiently but is also more environmentally friendly than traditional coal-fired power plants.

 

While the world is moving towards clean energy, such as solar and wind power, baseload power plants remain critically important. As renewable energy is still subject to weather fluctuations, baseload power plants serve as "backup energy" to supplement when clean energy is insufficient to meet demand.

 

Although baseload power plants are essential, they also face environmental challenges.

In the future, we may see baseload power plants using cleaner technologies, such as Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) technology or the use of hydrogen and ammonia as fuel, which will significantly reduce environmental impacts.
