Mr. Siri Jirapongphan, Minister of Energy, revealed that the Ministry of Energy has assigned the Department of Alternative Energy Development and Efficiency (DEDE) to study approaches for cooperation in renewable energy development and energy conservation among the 10 ASEAN member states over the next 2 years. This is to be proposed at the 37th ASEAN Ministers on Energy Meetings (AMEM), which Thailand is honored to host in 2562.
The original target was to reduce energy consumption by 20% by 2563, but it has now been reduced by 21.3%. Therefore, the energy reduction target will be adjusted upwards, following the initial phase. Thailand has clearly promoted renewable energy plans and is a leader in the ASEAN region. Furthermore, next year there will be an ASEAN+3 meeting (China, Korea, Japan), all of which are countries that also prioritize renewable energy.
Mr. Sararat Prakobchart, Director of the Energy Conservation Promotion Bureau, DEDE, stated that DEDE is preparing to study operational guidelines to propose a new energy reduction target adjustment at the AMEM meeting hosted by Thailand, as the original target has already been exceeded. The AMEM meeting this year in Singapore approved expanding development to adjust new targets, with a focus on promoting energy in the transport sector.
Meanwhile, the Ministry of Energy is in the process of preparing a new national power development plan, or PDP2018. It is expected to be proposed at the National Energy Policy Council (NEPC) meeting this December for consideration, approval, and announcement for use in early 2562. It is affirmed that electricity prices will not affect the public.
